Being Incapacitated.

The upside to being laid up for a bit is that you get to do things you never usually have time to do, the downside, is that the things that are usually easy get incredibly hard. I haven't left the house in two days... stepped outside onto the balcony for about three minutes, and so far, have spent most of that time watching movies i've been meaning to see and trying to figure out why i should want to have Google+. It would all be easier if i was better at doing nothing, but unfortunately, after two and a half days of hobbling around on one leg and crutches, i'm pretty over it. Time for some more rom coms and period films. Hooray!

An Apology.

It was recently pointed out to me that my blog was getting 'dusty'. It's not that i don't want to write anything, it's more the problem of needing a few more hours in the day. When trying to sort out ones life, sometimes the blog falls into the cracks. Soon! There will be an update with lots and lots of pictures and words. In the meantime, here is a piece i wrote for this month's ArtWrit. I haven't been so moved by such a small, simple show in a long time. I left thinking about it for weeks, if you're in london, go explore it at the Whitechapel Gallery.

Coming back to the real world.

Being away for a week in the magical place that is Cornwall isn't exactly easy when the welcoming arms of London equals ten hour work days and cold damp weather. For seven days i was transported to a place where i didn't have to carry around anything in my pockets save a deck of cards and a flashlight, most definitely not my phone since there is no hope of cell phone service. It's that kind of week that makes you ponder whether maybe the quiet life is the good life and maybe you should just spend your savings on a humble cottage and enjoy living by the sea not needing too much. These times that make you realize how wonderful candle light is and being able to see stars at night and only hear the sound of waves as you wonder back to your house.

Okay, okay, okay.

So, i've realized that something happens when you have a job... especially a job that you're at most days from 8:45 am until 7 pm and don't have a computer... and that's that all you can manage when you get home is eat and sleep. The basics. The last few weeks have been eating, sleeping and breathing Violet Cakes and it feels really nice to be busy again. Right now is a nervewracking in between time, visa applications, job hunts, house hunts, and the waiting game because nothing, nothing at all, can be done before the UK says i'm allowed to stay here for longer. Adventures will happen soon, adventures with pictures, and until then... i will leave you with this.

So Many Things.

Well, suffice it to say the last two weeks have been crazy, and that's the excuse i'll give for a blogging hiatus. When you have family visiting, a graduation from a master's program and a trip to france and spain, somehow these sorts of things happen. Craziness aside, we're back! Here i am! Sunkissed and ready for ... life? This blog has chronicled every aspect of life and now we're in the first phase ever where i'm not sure what comes next. In the next months it'll be finding a job, hopefully getting a new visa and moving apartments. Not too shabby. For now, deep breaths.

Americana & Bread.

Today i woke up and realized that my shoes were aligned perfectly for a slice of americana. Later that day i baked bread, and wrapped half in a tea towel, and realized that too reminded me of home.

2009, 2010.

2009 looked like:

Getting psyched up for my last semester of Sarah Lawrence, forgetting to eat one fateful morning before going to the gym and knocking a bunch of teeth out, learning how to deal with needles and novocaine and stitches and mostly learning about patience, meeting long time penpals turned best friends and so much more, graduating college, summertime and a full time job and learning things the hard way, flooded basements and ruined collections of books, a move across an ocean, new friends and adventures, and a lovely christmas back home.

I'm pretty sure 2009 was the worst and best year to date. Ups and downs and ups again. Onward into 2010.

Hopes:

More adventures, new countries, a master's earned, new and old friendships evolving, jobs gotten, a solid life starting.

Weekend Life.

(photos by Sascha)

This week came and went quickly, but with a lot crammed into it. Discovering streets i'd never come close to, and a farm complete with goats and pigs and an overabundance of birds, and little cafés, and banana pancakes, and new markets that feel like home, and more cupcakes and carrot cake and the biggest sausages of your life, and hours spent at a pub with chalkboard walls, and long walks, and fireworks to celebrate a guy who tried to blow up parliament, and chicken pie and chips, and beers and more beers, and home cooked meals, and sitting on top of huge hills in the middle of a park watching all of london light up as darkness falls, and steak and rib dinners, and rooftop bars, and new people, and old friends.

Weekend Life.

Weekends have come to look like this. Cupcakes and friends and tea cozies and big brunches and coffees in the afternoon and sweets eaten slowly and shared by everyone, walks down cobblestone streets, primary colors and cloudy skies.

Frieze! Freeze!

Today i went to my first ever art fair, and it was overwhelming, and there were thousands of people, there was lots of crowding, and this is what it looked like, also there was a little bit of old school wallace collection thrown in there (but it fit in because of the damien hirst show).
